A popular approach to Civil War history.... The bi-monthly magazine is lavishly illustrated with modern color and historical images. Blue & Gray is theme oriented. Each issue features a selected battlefield or historical site. About half the magazine is devoted to this feature, called "The General's Tour." The rest of the magazine is composed of shorter features differing in length from 1,000 to 6,000 words. We accept a wide variety of features on the Civil War, but DO NOT ACCEPT FICTION OR POETRY. The editors admit freely to a partiality toward subscribers' submissions.
Short (1,000-2,000 wd.) manuscripts about obscure Civil War sites or current preservation efforts for our "Back Roads" column (with modern photos).
Manuscripts must be typed, double-spaced, with notes in the margins or at the end. (Include a Macintosh or IBM compatible disk with your hard copy, preferably using Microsoft Word or a derivative.) New or controversial information MUST BE REFERENCED. We do not accept responsibility for submissions not accompanied by a self-addressed and stamped envelope (SASE). Queries (including outline, general thesis, illustration possibilities, etc.) are encouraged; include SASE. Submissions which include illustrations receive priority. Include a brief "About the Author," and a list of sources. Articles that require extensive editing will not be reviewed. For instance, military personnel must be addressed with their full name and rank at the first instance in the article. Spell check is vital.
In most cases the decision-making process takes 45-75 days.
Successful authors will receive 12 copies of the issue in which their article appears.
Payment on publication.
